Citizens of the EU
For visitors from most countries, Germany requires a passport, which needs to be valid for at least 6 months. EU nationals do not require a visa to enter the Federal Republic of Germany.

Non-EU citizens
All Non-EU citizens require a visa. However, a visa is not required for visits of up to 90 days in an 180 day period for nationals of those countries for which the European Community has abolished the visa requirement.

You may apply for short stay visas (Schengen Visas) at missions of the German Federal Foreign Office, such as embassies and consulates.

Invitation Letter
An invitation letter for the purpose of obtaining a travel visa or permission to attend the meeting will be handed out on request after registration for the conference.
For the invitation letter we need the following information of your passport: 

  • date of birth (day.month.year):
  • place of birth (city, country):
  • passport number:
  • expiry date of passport (day.month.year):
  • nationality:

After receipt of your passport details we will issue the invitation letter and send it to you by email.

Currency
As in most countries of the European Union, the official German currency is the Euro (€).
Please note that there are no general bank hours in Germany. Most banks are open in the morning hours and just a few hours in the afternoon or early evening.

Major credit cards are accepted at most cashpoints, stores, restaurants and hotels.

Germany's international pre-dial is +49 (0049).

Public places like airports, universities, libraries, restaurants and cafés may offer "free"-WiFi Hotspots.

Electricity
The electrical power supply in Germany is 220 V, 50 Hz, AC.Official plugs in Germany are:

  • "Schukostecker" (round) Type F/ CEE 7/4
  • "Eurostecker" (flat) Type C/ CEE 7/16

Germany's standard time zone is UTC/GMT +1 hour.

Travel information

RWTH Aachen is easily accessible with public transportation. Buses and trains run frequently and reliably and ensure a quick connection to the city and surrounding areas.

By Bus and Train

The nearest train station to RWTH Aachen is the Aachen West Train Station. Both RWTH's central campus with the Main Building on Templergraben and the Campus Hörn can be reached from here by foot. However, they are also accessible by bus. 

The Aachen Central Train Station and RWTH Aachen are connected by various bus lines. The bus ride to all campuses lasts about 20 minutes. 
 

Train Connections to the Aachen West Train Station

  • Regionalbahn, RB for short, and Regionalexpress, RE for short, coming from Mönchengladbach, Duisburg, Dortmund, that is RB 33 and RE 4
  • Euregiobahn coming from Stolberg/ Eschweiler/ Langerwehe and Düren as well as from Alsdorf/ Eschweiler-St. Jöris and Heerlen, such as RB 20

The Aachen West Train Station is not handicap accessible.

 

Train Connections to the Aachen Central Train Station

  • RB and RE coming from Mönchengladbach, Duisburg, Dortmund, that is RB 33 and RE 4, and RE coming from Cologne, specifically RE 9 and RE 1
  • Euregiobahn coming from Stolberg/ Eschweiler/ Langerwehe and Düren as well as from Alsdorf/ Eschweiler-St. Jöris and Heerlen, such as RB 20
  • ICE from Brussels and Frankfurt. IC from Berlin, Thalys from Cologne and Paris
  • Thalys from Cologne/Dortmund and Brussels/Paris

Take bus 13B from the Aachen Central Train Station and get off at the stop Technische Hochschule

 

Bus Connections in Aachen

  • Multiple bus lines connect the University with the Aachen city center, other city areas, and its surroundings. There are also numerous (direct) connections to Dutch and Belgian communities.
  • You can reach the Main Building from the Aachen Central Station without switching lines by taking any of the following buses: 4, 7, 17, 24, 27, 33, 37, 47, 73, 77, 147 and 173 and getting off at busstop Driescher Gässchen. You can also take line 13B from the Aachen Central Station and get off at the busstop Technische Hochschule.
